ONE ACT and TEN MINUTE Plays Sought for New Rocky
Mountain Voices 2008 Competition

writer who may be interested in the competition)
The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts announces
New Rocky Mountain Voices 2008, the organization’s TENTH
annual play competition. New Rocky Mountain Voices is a
program dedicated to showcasing new works by playwrights
in the Rocky Mountain States and is sponsored by the
non-profit Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts in
Westcliffe, Colorado.
A panel of jurors from the local and regional theater
community will review submissions and select the winning
plays which will be produced on the Westcliffe Center’s
Jones Theater stage September 5 and 6, 2008. Cast
members will be drawn from the local actors’ group, the
Westcliffe Center Players. An experienced director will
be chosen to mount the plays. A special invitation to
view the winning plays will be sent to directors and
producers of other Colorado theatre companies.
In addition to seeing their plays produced, the winning
playwrights will be awarded cash prizes of two hundred
dollars each for winning one act plays and one hundred
dollars each for winning ten minute plays, along with
certificates acknowledging their achievement. The 2007
competition’s winning playwrights were William C.
Kovacsik of Boulder, Colorado, and Diana Lewis of Santa
Fe, New Mexico. In addition, Honorable Mentions were
awarded to Kayt C. Peck of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and
Leonard Madrid of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions for the New Rocky Mountain Voices
competition must include the following:
Cover
letter, to include a summary of the author’s theater and
playwriting experience and goals, mailing address, email
address, telephone number and other pertinent contact
information.
Four
copies of the manuscript with no mention of the author’s
name or contact information anywhere in the manuscript
(evaluations will be conducted “blind”)
$5.00
for each play submitted (check or money order made
payable to “WCPA”)
Self-addressed, stamped envelope (if return of
manuscripts is desired)
Submissions must be postmarked no later than Thursday
May 1, 2008.
Plays
will be accepted from writers currently residing in or
attending an educational institution in Arizona,
Colorado, or New Mexico.
Plays
submitted must not have been published professionally.
Plays
must not exceed 30 minutes performance time
Plays
having a cast limited to a maximum of six characters and
which can be produced with one set or using set pieces
will be given preference
However, all submissions will be reviewed for artistic
merit and production potential
The
panel of jurors will select up to six plays from which
up to four will be selected as winners by the director
of the plays and the Westcliffe Center’s Artistic
Director in consultation
If
your play is selected as a winner, you grant the
Westcliffe Center permission to reprise the production
of the play locally and/or to enter its production of
the play into a community theater competition with the
understanding that the WCPA will notify you before the
additional production takes place
The
rating sheet used by members of the evaluation panel is
attached.
