WCPA regularly provides summer internships for qualified drama students at its facility at the Jones Theater in Westcliffe Colorado. Many former interns have said that it was the best summer experience that they have ever had in learning about the theater. We are located in a picturesque small town at the foot of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains.
The interns participate in every facet of theater work. In addition they work with local children for two, two week long, sessions of our summer creativity camp for local children, now in its fourteenth year.
The camps consist of theater training in improvisation, theater games, story telling, makeup and costume. The children present original skits at the end of each two-week session, which they have developed with the help of the interns. Creativity Camps this year are June 16-27 and June 30 through July 11, they are non-residential, for local children 6-16,, Camps take place from 9-12 each day in the great room of Studio 2 adjacent to the Jones Theater.
In addition, interns will be able to perform roles in at least one main stage production i.e.: ”The Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare. They will be involved in the technical aspects of our third main stage production “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds”: lighting, set design, building and set decoration. They may also be involved in co-directing our Youth Theater musical production in late August, if their college schedule permits.
The Internships run from early June until mid August. and can continue through August, depending upon student availability, Internships are limited to four students. The theater provides excellent housing in its new building, Studio 2, which has a modern, furnished, four-bedroom student apartment. We also pay a weekly living allowance; we do not reimburse travel expenses.
