SHAKESPEARE IN THE SANGRES:
“OUTDOOR THEATER
AT ITS BEST”
New this 2008 Season! We present two of
Shakespeare’s most famous plays on alternate
evenings in a dramatic outdoor setting. Directed by
Chris Tabb.
Our first play is “Romeo and Juliet”. The play tells
of the son and daughter of rival families who fall
in love, causing age-old grudges to resurface to
harm the star-crossed lovers. “West Side Story” told
the tale in modern terms, but come and enjoy
Shakespeare’s original version.
Our second play is “Taming of the Shrew”.
The hero, Petruchio, decides that Kate, the beautiful girl
with the awful temper, will make a wonderful wife
once she is tamed. Kate fights him tooth and nail
and wants nothing to do with any suitor. The stormy
courting—through the final taming of the shrew—is
one of Shakespeare's most enjoyable comedies.
You can enjoy these two performances at 6PM on
alternate evenings, in the new amphitheatre and park
behind the Jones Theater. Come as early as 5:00 PM
and bring your picnic basket to dine on the lawn
before the show. Or have dinner first at the
adjacent Feed Store Pub and Grill. Any way you
decide to do it, you are certain to have a memorable
evening.
Shakespeare in the Sangres opens with “Romeo and
Juliet” and “Taming of the Shrew”
in June and July
on alternate evenings.

“ROUNDING THIRD”
We open our 2008 Season with the insightful comedy
by Richard Dresser. Starring members of the
Westcliffe Players. Directed by Dick Senf.
“Rounding Third” is the heartwarming and tumultuous
journey of two Little League dads who are coaches
through an entire season, from their first tentative
meeting to the climactic championship. Here is what
other people have said about the play:
“This play reflects the passions, the joy and the
pain
that fills the heart of any person who has ever
loved a child
who was competing for anything, from sports to
spelling bees to talent shows”.
"Every time something serious Don or Michael says
threatens to take the play into a touching emotional
space, it is immediately defused with a brilliantly funny
punch line”.
"Their clash of styles and wills drives this funny,
acerbic and touching play through the bumpy terrain of
fatherhood and baseball”.
Thu, Fri & Sat, May 29, 30 & 31 at 7:30 pm
Fri & Sat, June 6 & 7 at 7:30 pm
Sunday Matinee, June 8 at 2:00 pm

"CREATIVITY CAMP FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS"
This year we will have two sessions: June 16 thru
June 27 and June 30 thru July 11.
Children and teens from 7 to 16 learn all aspects of
stagecraft from theater games, improvisation and
makeup techniques as well as how to design their own
sets and costumes for their final productions. These
are presented for parents and friends on the last
day of each class, at noon, in the Jones Theater.
Sessions run from 9 am to 12 noon, Monday through
Friday in Studio 2, adjacent to the Jones. Costs are
$75 for each participant for two weeks (30 hours)
and $70 for the second child from the same family.
Some scholarships are available. If your young
person is interested in attending, please call the
Jones Theater at 783-3004.
“THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON
MARIGOLDS”
Directed by Dan Hiester. Our prize winning fourth
play of the Season. It is a family comedy/drama that
will make you laugh and tug at your heartstrings at
the same time. Winner of the 1971 Pulitzer Prize,
the Obie Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle
Award as Best American Play of the season.
Frowzy, acid-tongued Beatrice Hunsdorfer is
supporting herself and her two daughters by taking
in a decrepit old boarder. She wreaks a petty
vengeance on everybody about her. One daughter,
Ruth, is a pretty, but highly-strung girl subject to
convulsions, while the younger daughter, Matilda,
plain and almost pathologically shy, has an
intuitive gift for science.
Encouraged by her teacher, Tillie undertakes a gamma
ray experiment with marigolds that wins a prize at
her high school—and also brings on the shattering
climax of the play. And yet, as Tillie's experiment
proves, something beautiful and full of promise can
emerge from even the most barren, afflicted soil.
This is the timeless lesson of the play and the root
of it’s moving power and truth.
Thu, Fri & Sat, July 24, 25 & 26 at 7:30 pm
Fri & Sat, Aug 1 & 2 at 7:30 pm
Sunday Matinee, Aug 3 at 2:00 pm
Tickets $10. Included in your Season Ticket.
“THE MIKADO”
The Youth Theater Musical is performed by graduates
of this year’s Creativity Camp and other local
children and teens.
Open auditions for the musical will be held on
Monday, July 14 at 2:00 PM in Studio 2 adjacent to
the Jones Theater.
Gilbert and Sullivan's wit takes aim at an Oriental
love story, complicated by class distinctions, an
erratic legal system, and a befuddled government.
Audiences will laugh at the many twists and turns
our ill-fated couple must endure before they are
allowed to marry. Enjoy such engaging tunes as "I've
Got a Little List", "Three Little Maids From School”
and “A Wandering Minstrel, I".
Thu, Fri & Sat, Aug 14, 15 & 16 at 7:00 pm
